What are the disadvantages of using disposable plastic bottles ?

From life-saving appliances to personal care products, plastic bottles show up everywhere you look. It’s not a surprise that one of the most used packaging formats in the personal care sector is plastic bottles. We can see them containing products such as shampoo, shower gels, lotions, creams.

The main drawback of plastic shampoo bottles is that so many of them end up in landfills rather than being reused—it takes centuries for plastic shampoo bottles to biodegrade. In addition, the process of degradation emits pollutants into the atmosphere.

You might be wondering why don’t we reuse these disposable plastic bottles? You may not realise that those bottles are not ideal for a refill. Some of the materials used for manufacturing those bottles are hazardous to human health.

Their design is not made for easy refilling; they have a very small bottleneck, making it very difficult to pour new material inside. Many plastic shampoo bottles are not safe for hot liquids or dishwashers, or microwave ovens.

What are the disadvantages of using glass shampoo bottles ?

You can also find refillable bottles made with glass. They are 100% reusable and do not lose any of their natural properties during reuse and recycling. However, they still have some drawbacks.

The manufacturing process of glass bottles is very costly because it requires a lot of energy. The distribution is also expensive due to its weight and the subsequent costs of shipping. Also, there is a possibility of breakage, which can lead to injuries to those who are using.
